According to French media, Michelin announced that it will start producing "100% environmentally friendly" tires from 2050, that is, using all sustainable materials (renewable, recyclable or biological materials).
According to Agence France-Presse, French tire manufacturing giant Michelin recently announced that after 2050, all Michelin tires will use sustainable materials (renewable, recyclable or natural raw materials).
Michelin said in an announcement that the focus is to promote the research and development of substitutes for butadiene (mainly derived from petroleum extraction), a synthetic rubber component. The company emphasized: “We must rely on plant waste (waste wood, rice bran, leaves and corn stalks), such as Michelin tires that use 4.2 million tons of wood chips each year.”
According to the report, styrene, another component of synthetic rubber, can also be refined with packaging boxes or insulation board waste. Michelin has established a cooperative relationship with Canadian company Pyrowave. Pyrowave is committed to this process and will establish a demonstration plant in France before 2023. Michelin is also very interested in bottles: it has provided funds to cooperate with the French company Carbios, which is good at recycling PET plastic products and can produce polyester yarns for tire manufacturing.
In early February of this year, Michelin started to build its first tire recycling plant in Chile, and its partner is Enviro in Sweden. The factory can turn used tires into many rubber products, including remaking tires or conveyor belts.
The report pointed out that in 2020, 28% of Michelin's tire manufacturing ingredients come from natural raw materials or recyclable materials. Michelin also belongs to a future energy alliance of companies such as Total, Carrefour and Airbus. The goal of this cooperation framework is to produce tangible results in reducing the impact of transportation and logistics on the climate from 2030. Michelin will launch its new strategic plan for the next 10 years on April 8.
