The Michelin group is preparing to land on the moon by 2025, part of a team assembled by US aerospace giant Northrop Grumman, which participated in NASA's Artemis in November 2021 Artemis program.
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, USA in early January 2022, Michelin first showed the public a model of a future lunar rover equipped with a Michelin airless tire/wheel hybrid.
The tire/wheel hybrid can withstand the extreme conditions of the lunar poles, making exploration of the lunar surface easier and enabling a sustainable presence on the moon by 2025.
Ultimately, the goal of the Michelin R&D team is to fit tires on vehicles heading to Mars. NASA-developed Artemis plans to put a man and a woman on the moon in 2025. The two astronauts will travel around in a new rover, looking for a suitable location for a base camp.
Michelin will rely on its "high-tech materials" and technology in developing air-free tire solutions to develop the lunar tire, and participation in the project provides a mobility solution and "inspires" its ability to innovate.
The prototype version of the tire shown at CES was 3D printed, and Michelin did not specify the materials used for the prototype.
