There are many types of tires on the market, and when you need to change a tire, are you at a loss and unsure how to choose a tire? In fact, the "good or bad" of tires is hidden on them.
Wear resistance, based on the "3T" index
When choosing tires, we will first consider durable ones, which have strong wear resistance. The side of the tire is marked with Treadwear, Traction, and Temperature, respectively representing the wear index, traction index, and temperature index, abbreviated as 3T index. Among them, the wear index is an indicator that measures the wear performance and service life of the tire tread.
The "3T" index comes from the Transportation in the United States. The United States government requires that all tires imported into the United States must be marked with parameters representing the main performance of tires, which is a unified mandatory standard for tire quality rating.
The wear index is expressed in specific numbers, with larger numbers indicating better wear resistance. The wear index is only a reference value calculated based on the standard tire quality system and cannot represent the actual usable mileage of the tire.
For example, a tire with a wear index of 400 indicates that its wear resistance is four times that of a standard tire with a base of 100, but it does not mean that the tire can travel four times the standard distance.
Silence, looking at patterns
Silence is also an important factor when choosing tires, and tires with good quietness can provide us with a comfortable driving and riding environment. The main sources of tire noise are the noise generated by the pattern hitting the ground, and the structural noise in the tires and wheels caused by the roughness of the ground.
At present, tire pattern blocks with good quietness in the market are usually arranged irregularly, as ordered pattern blocks often accompany significant tire noise. In addition, many tires have variable pitch design with pattern blocks, which is also a pattern design that reduces tire noise.
Taking Pirelli Cinturato Rosso tire as an example, the unique scale pattern design enables the tire to use progressive gradient spacing arrangement to improve the noise output frequency during rolling, thus effectively reducing tire noise. In addition to reducing tire noise in pattern design, many tire companies have introduced silent cotton tires, which add a new layer of sound-absorbing cotton material - porous polyurethane cotton - to the inner side of the tires to block the propagation of sound waves.
When it comes to muting, it is necessary to mention the ContiSilent muting technology of German brand. Tyres using ContiSilent mute technology are equipped with inner tube shock absorbers, that is, polyurethane foam insulation, which is bonded to the inner side of the tread through adhesive. Regardless of the temperature, the interlayer structure will remain in its original state. Considering the differences in vehicle model, speed, and road conditions, ContiSilent can reduce the noise inside the car by up to 9 decibels.
Drainage performance, looking at grooves
The grooves and patterns on the tire are combined to improve drainage, which means that water flows out of the grooves through the patterns on the tire.
The main groove (longitudinal groove) has the strongest drainage capacity, and the deeper and wider the groove, the better the drainage performance. But increasing the width also reduces the grip of the tires, so it is necessary to find a balance point. The horizontal pattern groove is an auxiliary drainage function. Some tires are designed with a groove pattern on the drainage ditch, which can break the water film of the vehicle when driving at high speed, thus allowing the vehicle to have a higher speed on waterlogged roads.
Tire performance, depending on material
The material of the tire skeleton determines the performance of the tire and is the main load and load-bearing component in the tire. Its function is to provide tire support, withstand vehicle loads, ensure tire strength, air pressure, stability, and safety, and prevent tire deformation.
The tire material will also be displayed on the sidewall, with the crown and sidewall materials displayed separately. Common tire materials include nylon, polyester, polyamide, and steel.
Of course, in addition to the above, the brand, price, and model of tires are also factors that we need to consider when selecting tires. So, we need to select tires based on our own needs and multidimensional perspectives.
