Sulfur is a relatively common raw material used in the chemical industry, and also has important applications in the rubber industry. There are six main types of sulfur used in the rubber industry:
Precipitated sulfur: good dispersibility in rubber. It is suitable for advanced products and latex film products, etc.
Sulfur powder: It is obtained by crushing and screening refined block sulfur. It is the main vulcanizing agent of rubber.
Insoluble sulfur: Because this product is insoluble in carbon disulfide, it is called insoluble sulfur. This product is insoluble in the rubber compound at the processing temperature before vulcanization, and soluble in the rubber compound at the vulcanization temperature to play a vulcanizing effect. It can prevent the disadvantages such as sulfur spraying and adhesion decline of the compounded rubber. It is also not easy to produce early vulcanization. It is suitable for important rubber products such as steel cord tires, and the dosage is the same as that of ordinary sulfur.
Colloidal sulfur: Grind sulfur powder or precipitated sulfur together with dispersant in a ball mill or colloid mill to make a paste, which is colloidal sulfur, and can also be dried into a solid. The particles are extremely fine, with a particle size of 1 to 3 μm. Mainly used for latex products, with uniform dispersion and slow settling speed.
Sulfur mixture: It is made by mixing sulfur powder with polymer or other additives. The purpose is to improve the dispersibility of sulfur and prevent the agglomeration and crystallization of sulfur.
Surface-treated sulfur: It is obtained by attaching powder sulfur or precipitated sulfur to the surface with a treatment agent (such as polyisobutylene, etc.) that has no effect on vulcanization. It is characterized by easy mixing, good dispersibility, low scorch property and high operational safety.
The use of various properties of sulfur in the rubber industry to process a variety of products plays a very important role in the application of the rubber industry, and fully demonstrates the role of sulfur in rubber production.
